A lot of the challenge is that fresh food often needs to be harvested, transported, stored, and sold in very particular ways. A lot of what you'd find at a western grocery store, for example, arrived via cold chain logistics - specially chilled trucks and warehouses keeps our food as fresh as possible before it reaches stores (and even once on shelves). None of that really exists in developing contexts - once food is harvested it needs to be transported and sold almost immediately, lest it spoil on trucks or shelves.

It's no secret that safe, affordable housing is the foundation that helps individuals, families, and communities grow and thrive. Increasing that is a cornerstone of BlueHub Loan Fund's mission. Since 1985 they've invested an incredible $330 million across the housing spectrum, from affordable and supportive housing to shelters. For those of us grappling with the magnitude of $330M here's what that means in real terms: over 26,500 units built, preserved, or enhanced across the USA. A place to call home for tens of thousands of Americans.

In addition to affordable housing BlueHub Loan Fund also funds projects supporting access to healthy food in low income communities. About 10% of US families face hunger and food insecurity — defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. BlueHub supports affordable housing projects in underserved communities & increases access to healthy, affordable food in America.

Displaced by decades of conflict, there are currently over two million Palestinian refugees living in refugee camps in and around Palestine. The camps that house these people are often woefully inadequate, lacking access to basic services (education, healthcare) and vital infrastructure (energy, heat, clean water, fresh food). Although theoretically temporarily, many living in refugee camps have no line of sight on when they might be able to go home or be allowed to go settle somewhere more permanently. Refugee camp life, to put it simply, is like living in an awful kind of limbo - no stability today, no idea of when it will end.

We've come together with FATEN (Palestine for Credit & Development), a local community development non-profit, and Kiva to invest directly to support Palestinians living in refugee camps in Gaza and the West Bank. FATEN has a long history of supporting local refugees, actually having been created as an iniative by Save the Children but spun off to operate independently once it took off.

This cause is a portfolio of direct investments into Palestinians living in refugee camps. We've selected a handful of different targets, including helping locals buy things like solar panels, water filtratation devices, and paying for education for their families.

FATEN helps to support Palestinian people, specifically those living in refugee camps throughout the West Bank and Gaza.

The world is currently generating double the amount of plastic waste compared to two decades ago, and a significant portion of this waste is either disposed of in landfills, incinerated, or released into the environment. According to a recent report from the OECD, only 9% of this plastic waste is successfully recycled.

As the global population and incomes continue to rise, there is an ongoing and substantial increase in the production and disposal of plastic.

In response to this critical issue, direct investments are being made in women in the developing world to empower them to operate small businesses focused on recycling plastic within their communities. Such investments have the potential to benefit not only local communities but also contribute to addressing the global plastic waste crisis. Over one billion tons of food is wasted every year. Despite an abundance of food being grown worldwide, almost 40% doesn't make it to market. Perfectly good food gets thrown out because of packaging imperfections, visual defects, or upcoming expiration dates. There’s no shortage of hungry people who would happily take this ‘ugly’ food, but most of it is simply thrown away because the cost of transporting it to them is just too high. This makes food insecurity less an issue of food quantity and more an issue of availability - we have the food, we just need to get it to the right people. 

Nilus works with farmers and distributors to reclaim deliciously ‘ugly’ food that would otherwise be thrown away, and brings it to local hungry, low income populations. It’s delivered to community kitchens or sold at ultra affordable prices (an average 10x lower than what they would pay at a supermarket). This reduces food waste, creates jobs for drivers, and brings fresh nutritious foods to communities at a fraction of the usual price.
