For many of us our pets are indispensable parts of our lives - our support in an increasingly crazy world. Unfortunately for all the support they give us there are animals all across the United States who lack support themselves. From working to re-house some of the country's 70,000,000+ strays, to supporting the rehabilitation, training, and socialization of pets, this cause is changing that. We've partnered with multiple CDFIs across the USA to invest directly into small organizations that support our pets (or our pets to be), from shelters to daycares.

A great example of the kind of organization this cause has previously supported is Dog Day Afternoon, a specialty daycare service for dogs with health issues. This organization was started after founder Leslie's experience taking care of her own rottweiler with chronic health issues. She realized that there simply weren't any facilities dedicated to caring for animals like this on a daily/overnight basis so one of our CDFI partners funded her to do just that. Today Dog Day Afternoon has expanded beyond its initial scope to include caring for dogs that are nearing their end of life as well as working with other local NGOs to find local shelter dogs homes across the country.

We probably aren't the first to have noticed, but there's a mental health crisis ravaging the USA. Over 20% of all Americans are currently struggling wtih at least one type of mental health condition.  Half of those? Not receiving treatment because care is either completely unavailable or they're simply priced out of receiving it.

The why is complicated: COVID, social media, worsening income inequality, an incredibly warm future. The effects less so: increased rates of self harm, suicide, lost productivity, incarcerations, homelessness, addiction.

Many people think of mental health care as consisting mostly just in access to therapists and medication. The reality is that mental health solutions are as varied as the underlying causes. Things like afterschool programs for at-risk youth are just as much mental health solutions as subsidized therapy, sometimes even moreso given that the social ROI on these kinds of preventative measures often exceeds that of our typical responsive approaches.

It's no secret that safe, affordable housing is the foundation that helps individuals, families, and communities grow and thrive. Increasing that is a cornerstone of BlueHub Loan Fund's mission. Since 1985 they've invested an incredible $330 million across the housing spectrum, from affordable and supportive housing to shelters. About 10% of US families face hunger and food insecurity — defined as a lack of consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Displaced by decades of conflict, there are currently over two million Palestinian refugees living in refugee camps in and around Palestine. The camps that house these people are often woefully inadequate, lacking access to basic services (education, healthcare) and vital infrastructure (energy, heat, clean water, fresh food). Although theoretically temporarily, many living in refugee camps have no line of sight on when they might be able to go home or be allowed to go settle somewhere more permanently. Refugee camp life, to put it simply, is like living in an awful kind of limbo - no stability today, no idea of when it will end.

We've come together with FATEN (Palestine for Credit & Development), a local community development non-profit, and Kiva to invest directly to support Palestinians living in refugee camps in Gaza and the West Bank. FATEN has a long history of supporting local refugees, actually having been created as an iniative by Save the Children but spun off to operate independently once it took off.

Whether it's in huge cities or rural areas, getting fresh healthy food into the homes of some of the world's most vulnerable people is one of the biggest challenges of our age.

You're probably thinking "what's so hard about getting food to people?". That's what we thought until we spent a year digging into it. A lot of the challenge is that fresh food often needs to be harvested, transported, stored, and sold in very particular ways. A lot of what you'd find at a western grocery store, for example, arrived via cold chain logistics - specially chilled trucks and warehouses keeps our food as fresh as possible before it reaches stores (and even once on shelves). None of that really exists in developing contexts - once food is harvested it needs to be transported and sold almost immediately, lest it spoil on trucks or shelves.

Their energy and patience allow them to champion challenging, but high-impact projects. Typically, their early loans pave the way for additional financing from other lenders and funders.  

They don’t just do loans. They roll up our sleeves and provide customized technical assistance and support to help local visionaries succeed. Organizations discover new resources and grow by working with them. They particularly encourage the use of sustainable building practices in projects they finance.

Chicago Community Loan Fund offers affordable financing and support for community development in low- to moderate-income areas across metropolitan Chicago.

It is not easy to escape from poverty. Low-income Americans face numerous obstacles to building better lives for themselves and their families. For many, the promise of the American Dream seems to be slipping away. That’s where Good Fund come in.

Capital Good Fund is a nonprofit, U.S. Treasury-certified Community Development Financial Institution that helps people fix their finances.
